Part 5: Ansar, Muhajirun & Community Structure

First Islamic Community (Part 5): Ansar, Muhajirun & Community Structure – IGCSE Islamiyat 0493

The migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah in 1 AH was not just a physical journey – it was the beginning of a new Islamic society. In Madinah, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) established a community based on faith, brotherhood, equality, and social justice. The Muslims were divided into two main groups: the Muhajirun (emigrants from Makkah) and the Ansar (helpers of Madinah). The way these two groups were united is one of the most powerful examples of community building in history and is frequently tested in Paper 1 of IGCSE Islamiyat 0493.

The Muhajirun – The Emigrants of Faith

The Muhajirun were the Muslims who left Makkah and migrated to Madinah for the sake of Islam.

This was an act of extreme sacrifice.

They:

  • left their homes
  • left their wealth
  • left their families
  • left their businesses
  • risked their lives

They did not migrate for comfort – they migrated to save their faith.

Many arrived in Madinah:

  • with nothing
  • hungry
  • homeless
  • dependent on Allah and the community

This shows:

Iman over material comfort.

Why the Muhajirun are Important

The Muhajirun are important because they:

  • showed complete commitment to Islam
  • proved loyalty to the Prophet
  • trusted Allah over security
  • became the backbone of the early Muslim state

Without their sacrifice, Islam could not have survived.

Memorisation bullets:

  • Left Makkah for Islam
  • Gave up homes and wealth
  • Migrated in 1 AH
  • Showed sacrifice and loyalty

The Ansar – The Helpers of Madinah

The Ansar were the people of Madinah who welcomed the Prophet and the Muhajirun.

Before Islam, they were divided into two tribes:

  • Aws
  • Khazraj

Islam united them.

When the Prophet arrived, the Ansar:

  • opened their homes
  • shared their food
  • shared their wealth
  • gave land and property
  • treated the Muhajirun as family

They did this without expecting anything in return.

This is one of the most beautiful examples of selflessness in Islamic history.

Why the Ansar are Important

The Ansar are important because they:

  • made Hijrah possible
  • provided safety to Islam
  • protected the Prophet
  • showed generosity and brotherhood

They are praised in the Qur’an for their sacrifice.

Memorisation bullets:

  • Helpers of Madinah
  • Welcomed Prophet and Muhajirun
  • Shared homes and wealth
  • Showed generosity and selflessness

The Brotherhood (Mu’akhah) – A Revolutionary System

One of the first actions of the Prophet (pbuh) in Madinah was to establish brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar.

He paired individuals from each group as brothers.

This meant:

  • they supported each other
  • shared wealth
  • helped in business
  • protected one another

This system:

  • removed tribal pride
  • removed racism
  • created unity
  • built emotional bonds

It was not symbolic – it was practical and economic.

This is heavily tested.

Importance of Brotherhood (Exam Focus)

The brotherhood system shows:

  • Islam’s equality
  • care for the poor
  • unity of believers
  • practical social welfare

It turned strangers into family.

Memorisation bullets:

  • Established in Madinah
  • Paired Muhajir with Ansari
  • Shared wealth and support
  • Removed tribal divisions

The Mosque – Centre of the Community

The Prophet built the Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah.

It was not just a place of prayer. It was:

  • a school
  • a court
  • a meeting hall
  • a shelter
  • a centre of learning
  • a centre of decision-making

This shows Islam’s holistic approach to life.

The mosque was the heart of the community.

The Constitution of Madinah – A New Social Order

The Prophet introduced the Constitution of Madinah, which:

  • united Muslims and non-Muslims
  • established rights and duties
  • protected minorities
  • ensured justice
  • created law and order

It made the Prophet the head of state and judge.

This is extremely examinable.

Why the Constitution is Important

It shows:

  • political wisdom
  • justice
  • equality
  • peaceful coexistence
  • rule of law

Memorisation bullets:

  • First written constitution
  • Protected all citizens
  • Established justice
  • United tribes

Economic Support & Social Welfare

The Prophet ensured:

  • the poor were cared for
  • the hungry were fed
  • the weak were protected
  • zakat was established
  • charity was encouraged

The Ansar helped the Muhajirun:

  • find work
  • start businesses
  • rebuild lives

This created:

A welfare-based society.

Unity Over Tribalism

Before Islam, Madinah was divided by tribal hatred.

Islam replaced:

  • tribal identity
  • blood pride
  • clan loyalty

With:

  • brotherhood in faith
  • equality
  • unity

This is a key transformation and often tested.

Why Community Structure is Important (Exam Focus)

This topic is tested because it shows:

  • Islam as a complete system
  • social justice
  • unity building
  • care for the needy
  • practical leadership

Examiners love answers that show:

How Islam built a functioning society, not just beliefs.

Lessons for Muslims Today

From the Ansar and Muhajirun, Muslims learn:

  • generosity
  • hospitality
  • sacrifice
  • unity
  • social responsibility
  • helping refugees and migrants
  • caring for the poor

This is powerful for 4-mark answers.

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • mixing up Ansar and Muhajirun
  • forgetting brotherhood system
  • ignoring Constitution of Madinah
  • not explaining significance
  • writing only lists without context

Last Tested in IGCSE Islamiyat Exams

Ansar, Muhajirun and brotherhood are frequently tested in Paper 1, especially:

  • Hijrah
  • brotherhood system
  • Ansar’s support
  • unity of Muslims

Practice Exam Question

(a) Describe the role of the Ansar and Muhajirun in the early Islamic community and explain how the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) united them. [10]
(b) What lessons can Muslims today learn from the brotherhood established in Madinah? [4]

A* Model Answer

(a)
The Muhajirun were the Muslims who migrated from Makkah to Madinah in 1 AH, leaving behind their homes, wealth and families for the sake of Islam. The Ansar were the people of Madinah who welcomed them, shared their homes, food and wealth, and treated them as family. To unite the two groups, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) established brotherhood between individual Muhajirun and Ansar, allowing them to support each other. He also built the mosque as the centre of the community and introduced the Constitution of Madinah, which created unity, justice and cooperation among all citizens. This system removed tribal divisions and built a strong Muslim community.

(b)
This brotherhood teaches Muslims the importance of generosity, unity and caring for others. It shows that believers should support one another, help those in need and put faith above tribal or racial differences. Muslims today can learn to welcome others, share resources and build strong communities.
