Major Themes of the Qur’an

Major Themes of the Qur’an – IGCSE Islamiyat 0493

The Major Themes of the Qur’an is one of the most important sections of the IGCSE Islamiyat 0493 syllabus. In this topic, students study selected passages from the Qur’an and are required to understand their meaning, identify their theme, and explain their importance in the lives of Muslims today.

Cambridge does not test this topic as a single chapter. Instead, students are examined on individual passages, each of which falls under one of three main themes. To score well, students must be able to:

  • Recognise the correct theme
  • Explain what the passage teaches
  • Describe why it is important for Muslims

This section of our guide is organised exactly according to the syllabus and exam requirements.

The Three Major Themes of the Qur’an

The passages are grouped into three themes:

How the Major Themes Are Tested in the Exam

In Paper 1, questions on the Major Themes of the Qur’an usually require students to:

  • Identify the theme of a given passage
  • Explain what the passage teaches
  • Describe its importance in Muslim life

These are usually 10-mark or 15-mark questions, so clear structure and relevance are essential.

How to Study This Section Properly

To do well in this topic:

  1. Study each passage individually
  2. Learn:
